Another possibility is that the knife can get stuff inside of the track system that allows you to pull out your dishes after they are done. The track system can be easily disrupted and easily broken. If you cannot see what is blocking the track you could easily keep pulling and break the wheels that make this system work. Another aspect of safety is the unloading of the dishwasher. If you have children, you should be concerned about knives in your dishwasher. They could very easily accidentally grab the wrong side of the knife when trying to help unload the machine. As mentioned early, knives tend to move and shift during the dishwashing cycle. So, if someone is not paying attention they could reach for a plate and accidentally grab the sharp end of a knife. After a while, your knives will begin to become dull if you continue to put them in the dishwasher. The chances of mobility inside the machine will help your knife become dull. By them bouncing around other items they will experience more wear and tear. The pressure of the water and intensity of the soap used will also begin to dull your knives. If you place your knives in the silver wear compartment of the machine face up, they will endure more water pressure and over time this will definitely have an effect. Washing your knives by hand increases the safety of people who come into contact with them. This will also help to keep your silverware sharper over time. The longer amount of time your knives remain sharp the less amount of money you will have to spend replacing them. Prevention is the best cure and the best way to save you and your family money.
